Did you check the box "Allow live FX multi processing on ... CPUs in the Audio Buffering Preferences? That made all the difference to me. Make sure to type the number of your CPUs (including virtual cores) in the box and you should be good to go.

could also try reducing the frequency of meter updates, that can have an impact on performance.
