converting to 16bit

Can I convert samples to 16bit with Reaper or do I need different software? I used to use sound forge for that kind of thing, but I don't have it anymore. If I need new software, is there any freeware which is as good? Thanks.

I have heard Audacity is pretty good thanks. So, if I download Audacity, will I be able to do with Audacity everything I used to do in Sound Forge?

What format are the samples in? Have you tried Reaper's batch converter under File\Batch file converter?

There is a free version of R8Brain which is regarded as pretty good at converting: Karbo

I'm just looking for a Sound Forge substitute basically. Audacity seems a pretty good choice????? I'll look into the other things suggested. thanks guys.

I have to say though, having downloaded Audacity - It's probably not the easiest way. Audacity definitely seems to give me the sort of options I was looking for.

Wilbur, use r8brain at the link posted above. It will let you do entire folders at one time. (and with excellent quality.)
