AW71 Autobox Revs Excessively - or Does It?

Hi there, i have a mate who has a number of these exact cars, yes down to the LD 28 instead of the RD, Anyway, the last one i drove was a few months back he asked me to change the torque convertor as his was doing the same as yours, the converter had 121k mls on i know as it came out of my 242, so he got a new one and together we whacked it in in a saturday, Driving it round the side of the farm put the foot down doing circa 20mph turning 90 deg. tail went all over the shop and it took off, once it gained traction it changed up immediately, I also drove it on the open road and it changes at app. 2k revs if i remember correctly out of first, 2k doesnt sound like a lot but it is pretty noisy!! My advice would be to look for a new torque conv. (possibly recon??) and while your at it if you can get a reconditioned gearbox for a fair price id change it as seperating the engine and box is no fun plus if your old torque did fry it could have sent all sorts of debris flying in there,

Ah My torque convertor has also done 120k. Much of it in a hilly town (Brighton) as a Taxi so it owes no-one anything. I will look for a replacement. Do I need a specially stiff or low revving one for the 148lbft of the diesel engine or is the normal 2.3 petrol one OK?

You will need one that is specifically for the diesel. The later diesels (700/900) use the ZF4HP22 gearbox which is an excellent match for the diesel engine. You may need to find the exact match for your particular engine but if you get stuck I have one that might be fine for your car. All the best, Peter.
