GM MIDI Renders Silence (SOLVED)

Rendering a midi track produces an empty audio track. The MIDI track uses ReaControl MIDI assigned to Microsoft GS Wavetable. Playback of midi track works, no problem. any help? thanks

What synth are you using on the track? Perhaps you could compress a simple problem project file (no samples needed) into a ZIP file and post it here as an attachment so we can have a look at it and see what's (not) happening? In XP, right-click the project file, select Send To ... compressed (Zipped) folder). drag any other required media files into the ZIP file, when you reply, scroll down a bit, open the "Additional Options" section if needed by clicking the double downwards arrows, click on [Manage Attachments], browse to your ZIP file, select and Upload it.

Is the Midfile played back via Microsoft's build in softsynth ? This cannot be rendered internally in Reaper afaik. edit: Just looked at your posted file. Seems indeed that you're using the Microsoft synth. This is like an external (hardware) synth for Reaper, so it cant't be rendered like a Vst synth. What you could do is connect the output of your soundcard with the line input with a cable and record that. Or some soundcards have an option to "record what you hear".

ok, is there a way to route the audio output of the midi track to another recording track? Or, a way to route the output of the Microsoft GS Wavetable Synth to the input of a separate recording track (as external source, not as internal patch)? thanks

Hi Johny, The MIDI-track itself contains no audio-data. You need to insert a VSTi (softsynth) on the track, as DarkStar wrote, or - if you want to use the wavetable synth - connect the output of your soundcard to its input. You should take care, that no other then the wavetable synth signal goes to the output (hence back to the input), otherwise you could have undesirable results whatsoever. I must say, that I don't feel very comfortable with this tip at all, but anyway - HTH! -Data

i understand there is no audio in the midi track. i want to use the GS wavetable sound, not a VSTi. you mean connect the hardware output jack to the input jack? no, i'm not comfortable with that either. prefer to keep things in the digital domain. surely there must be a way to connect the input of an audio track to the GS wavetable output? or, maybe just use an stand-alone converter, to render the output of the GS wavetable (not inside Reaper), and then import the result to Reaper.

Using your current setup, reaper is outputting midi and your soundcard (or is it windows?) is converting it to audio. You want to convert it to audio within reaper so you can render. I believe that there are 'soundfonts' that sound like general midi. For this to work you need a soundfont player (google 'sfz') and the soundfont of your choosing. Go to hammersound.com and soundfont collections. Sorry thats pretty vague. If you need more details, just ask.
