Roland VS and Reaper: That Syncing Feeling

I've followed quite a few discussions elsewhere in the forum about syncing Reaper with a Roland VS hard disk recorder. I just wanted to ask here in newbieland if there really is no thorough way to sync the two as yet. Or if someone could direct me to the best, most up to date view on the matter. My delight at discovering Reaper has taken a dip now that it seems it won't talk to my Roland VS. I tried inserting a SMPTE event, I tried sending Song Position data...and, yes, I can get the two to kick off together, but if I stop the VS, the Reaper cursor won't stay put...it returns to zero. Will the two systems really not just completely sync and get along? That would be odd. I hope this doesn't mean I have to go dig out Logic again...please no! Not exactly a newbie question. Sounds like you know the usual problem suspects. I am not familiar with the Roland VS (could you give a more specific model number for other readers?) I would try using each as a master, try both midi time code and regular SMPTE. Try a different frame rate, since you are not syncing to video (I am assuming) the rate shouldn't matter as long as each machine is set to the same rate (I heard of this correcting sync problems, no idea why). some links I would also try reaper chat for help in this case.

see if it's possible to use the roland as the master clock/transport. they're notoriously bad slaves.

(note: if you can get all the project files off the VS, reaper can directly load the VS project files apparently. i only ever use the 8 track MAS recording mode on mine though and just dump out via audio, which is a bit crap but seems to work okay) OT: has anyone else noticed how AWFUL the compressed recording modes are on those things, btw? the lossless MAS mode is fine but the other modes seem to have some sort of weird gate thing happening on ambient sounds.
